WLD 1203 – Vertical Down Position Arc Welding

» Course Description – Vertical  Down Position Arc Welding

In this course, theory and practice in the preparation and welding of Vertical Down position steel plate joints, using the E-6010 and E-7018 electrodes will be explored. Safety, joint preparation and American Welding Society, (from hereon known as AWS), welding procedures will be stressed.

Lecture, two hours a week; Lab, four hours a week.

Class will meet in the Bldg 6, Room E, welding classroom at the regularly scheduled lecture times.

Prerequisite WLD 1201 or concurrent enrollment or consent of instructor.

» Course Objectives

The following objectives will be completed in the welding lab in the Vertical Down position. The student will be able to:

Arc Welding

  • Establish an electric arc and deposit a 6” long stringer bead in the vertical down position with 2 restarts. (3/16-3/8 steel plate)
  •  Demonstrate an ability to weld a 6” fillet multi-pass weld joint (6 passes) This joint is identified as six pass T-fillet weld in the vertical down position. (3/16 -3/8 steel plate)
  • Demonstrate an ability to weld a 6” long lap weld joint in the vertical down position. (11 and 14 gauge steel plate)
  • Demonstrate an ability to weld a 6” long bevel, single V-butt weld joint with backer strip, in the vertical down position on 3/8” steel plate, to conform to Standard Welding Procedure Specifications by the AWS.
  • Demonstrate an ability to conduct a Visual Examination Inspection of these welds according to AWS criteria.
